Across more than 2,000 hours onstage, Mark Duckworth and Ted Duprez gradually developed a musical language of their own: an approach rooted in Spanish guitar traditions but shaped equally by classical composition, progressive rock, jazz, rhythm and the atmospheric possibilities of the recording studio.

Although Duckworth and Duprez emerged from much the same formal classical-guitar training, their instincts drew them towards opposing corners of its repertoire: Duprez towards the Romantic lyricism and emotional directness of Tárrega and Barrios, and Duckworth towards the contrapuntal architecture of Bach and the harmonically rich, rhythmically intricate writing of Villa-Lobos. Their later influences widened the contrast further: Duprez absorbed the atmosphere and ensemble dynamics of acts such as Pink Floyd, Yes, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan and The Band, finding particular inspiration in rhythm-section musicians such as Chris Squire, Bernard Purdie and Mark Sandman’s unconventional work with Morphine; Duckworth’s path ran through Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page before Pat Metheny became a defining influence.

The same pattern of resemblance and opposition runs through the musicians themselves. Although they share closely related neurodivergent experiences, these are expressed in markedly different ways: Duprez can appear outwardly extroverted, confidently commanding a room and speaking freely onstage, while his melodic playing is measured, economical and centred on emotional weight; Duckworth is more cautious and reserved away from the stage, but becomes technically fearless, expansive and intensely expressive once he begins to play. Fuerza emerges from the point at which these apparent opposites meet.

These varied influences do not appear on Fuerza as imitation or nostalgia. They have been absorbed into a shared compositional style developed through years of listening and responding to one another in real time. The album moves between intimacy and intensity, detailed counterpoint and instinctive rhythm, romantic melody and expansive, cinematic arrangement. At its centre is the distinctive conversation between Duckworth’s acoustic lead guitar and Duprez’s nylon-string rhythm playing: two contrasting voices that continually exchange roles, challenge one another and create space for the unexpected.

That conversation has always been central to the duo. Both musicians experienced music from an early age as a more instinctive and honest form of communication than ordinary conversation often allowed. Their shared neurodivergence has shaped the intensity with which they listen, react and become absorbed in performance, but it does not define the music. Rather, it forms part of the way they understand one another: through timing, dynamics, repetition, disruption and the subtle changes that occur when two musicians are completely present in the same moment.

The interaction between Duckworth and Duprez is therefore more than a matter of arrangement or technique. It is the foundation of the project itself: spontaneous, vulnerable, disciplined and alive. The compositions on Fuerza grew from that relationship, carrying within them the accumulated instinct of hundreds of performances and the trust required to leave space for uncertainty. The result is a collection of original music that draws widely from the pair’s influences while belonging unmistakably to them. Fuerza is both a record of where Duckworth & Duprez have arrived and a document of the musical language they have built together.
